Columbus was the son of Isais Varos and Teresita Ferguson. Early on, when they were still married, his last name was Varos; I don't yet know when he started going by his mother's last name.

He was also grandson of Columbus Ferguson (# 21953063), son of Elijah Ferguson (from Kentucky) and Marianne Quinche (from Switzerland by way of Red River Colony in Canada).

Fought in WWII; was at the Battle of the Bulge and earned a Purple Heart for the gunshot wound he received near Berlin.

Inducted into the New Mexico Democratic Hall of Fame in Jan 1990. Was Sheriff of Taos county from 1949 - 1953. Was District Supervisor for the State Bureau of Revenue from 1955 - 1956 and worked for the State Land Office in the Oil and Gas Department from 1957 - 1963 (assistant director last three years). Served on the State Corporation Commission 1963 - 1972.

With first wife (name not yet discovered), who died in 1960, he had six children: Robert, Vonavita, Emma, Joseph, Michael and Patty. With his second wife, Mollie Rivera, he had a son, Adam.

He died from complications of Parkinsons disease, which he'd had since (at least) 1977.
