Viola was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Eleanor Jane Backus and George Balthazar Miller. She had six siblings with one being her twin sister Leota.

Viola married James D. Huntsman on February 1, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah and the marriage was solemnized later in the LDS Salt Lake Temple. Viola and James had five children, Donna- Bigham, Eldon, Lauana- Pead, Joanne- Logie-Waters and Gordon. While raising there family they lived in Salt Lake City, Lehi, Pleasant Grove and American Fork before ending up in Orem.

She dedicated her life caring for her family and was well known for her homemade candies and baked goodies.
