New Jersey Governor. He graduated Williams College in 1925, with a law degree from Harvard University in 1928 and established a legal career. He served as a member of the New Jersey State Senate (1938-41) and as the New Jersey State Alcoholic Beverage Control Commissioner in 1941. In 1946, he was elected as a Republican the 43rd Governor of New Jersey, serving until 1954. During his term, the state constitution was revised, state agencies were restructured and an equal pay for equal work bill was sanctioned. After leaving office, he served as vice chairman of the President's Commission on Intergovernmental Relations, (1954-55), president of the National Municipal League, (1963-67) and New Jersey Tax Policy Commission, (1969-75). He died at age 72 in Haddonfield, New Jersey.
