Yeoman 2nd Class Ferber first joined the United States Navy in September of 1943. He was honorable discharged in November of 1947. He saw sea duty on the USS Sheridan and the USS LSM 455. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with 4 service stars, American Theater Campaign medal, World War II Victory medal, the Philippine Liberation ribbon and the Navy Unit Citation ribbon for his service on the USS Estes (F.A. Com. Phib. Group one), from Rear Admiral W.H.P. Blandy:

"I wish to express my deep appreciation of the splendid job all officers and men of the Staff and the Air Support Control Unit did in planning and executing our part of the Operation. Your long hours and days of hard and efficient work have been attended by results which not only pleased me, but have brought forth favorable comment from the Secretary of the Navy, Vice Admiral Turner, Lieut. General Holland Smith, and Rear Admiral HIll. With such an organization serving with me I look forward to further operations, on a larger scale, with confidence."
