Abstracted from his obituary in the Minneapolis, Kansas, Better Way, Thursday, July 25, 1918, page 1:
Henry McMillan was born New Milford, Susquehanna county, Pa., on Aug. 27, 1856. (sic) He was the youngest of a family of ten children.
In 1885 he accompanied his brother, A.P. McMillan, to Minneapolis, Kansas, where they established the "Pennsylvania Store." In 1890 his brother retired, leaving the store to him.
In 1886 he married Miss Mary Markley, the youngest daughter of Israel Markley.
In 1893 he sold his stock and the business, and about that time was appointed the post master of Minneapolis. In 1900 he was elected to the state senate from the 31st senatorial district. He was re-elected in 1912 to the same office. His townsmen elected him mayor of Minneapolis for four terms.

He and his wife adopted their daughter, Blanche, when an Orphan Train from the Children's Aid Society brought children to Minneapolis, Kansas in April, 1910. She was 8 years old. Harry and Mary McMillan had been married 24 years and were childless.
