ATHANASIUS BROAD IS NOW A YEOMAN - SENDS A COPY OF "BAYOU"

Mr. and Mrs. William H. Broad have received word that their son, Athanasius, is forging ahead in his navy service, he having recently been advanced from the grade of first class seaman to that of third class yeoman. he is still a member of the crew of the U.S.S. Mississippi and a recent furlough gave him opportunity to spend Thanksgiving in Baltimore. The time available was altogether too short to permit a home visit, and he said the next best thing was a glimpse of this historic city, which included a visit to Camp Meade and the base hospitals. The young man continues to wax fat on navy fare and healthful exercise, and about the only thing that appears to worry him is that the war didn't last long enough to enable him to get into the thick of it. Most young fellows would be satisfied with the assurance that they had done their full duty as opportunity presented itself, but his chap some of whose ancestors were in the British navy long years ago, seems to feel that he should have at least a scar or two to show for his service.

In a recent letter Yeoman Broad enclosed a copy of "The Bayou," a little newspaper that is published "somewhere at sea" once a week in the interest of the men serving on board the Mississippi. The spirit which pervades the American navy is well shown by the following which appears as part of "The Bayou's" caption: The Bayou will pass censor. Enclose a copy in your letter home and let the folks know about life aboard "The Pride of the Navy."
