Mrs. Mary Bowman was born on the 20th day of February, 1828, in Cumberland Co. Penn. Her maiden name was Miss Mary Rupely. The given name of her parents are unknown. She was married to Samuel Bear, January 9th, 1849. They moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois about the close of the same year, where they resided for five years. In the year 1864 (this should be 1854) they moved from Illinois to Iowa where they resided for ten years. They left Iowa and went to California in December, 1863, where Mr. Bear died on April 6, 1864. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bear returned with her family to Pennsylvania. Returning again to Iowa one year later. In the year 1868, she was married to Josiah Bowman. There were ten children born by her first marriage, six boys and four girls, and one by her second marriage. Four of these have died. She was converted at the age of sixteen years and united with the M.E. church, of which she was a member, until the year 1868, then she united with the Little Flock Baptist church and was a member of that church at the time of her death. She died at her home in Johns Township on February 10th, 1906, age 77 years, 11 months and 21 days. She leaves seven children, three sons and four daughters. Viz, Messrs S.R. Bear, A.L. Bear, G.B. Bear and Mesdames A.J. Wilson, M.A. Day, C.E. Lyon and Ida L. Awalt. These with many intimate friends and neighbors, mourn her loss.

The funeral services were held on Monday, February 12th at 11 o'clock, at the l(L)ittle Flock Baptist church, conducted by pastor, Rev. E.J. McCune. The remains were inter(r)ed in the Cross Roads Cemetery
