Viola was a gracious, kind and gentle woman who spread cheer to all who knew her. She followed the Lord and was devoted to her family. A native of Craven County, she was born on October 26, 1909 to the late William Southey and Hattie Sarah Morris Wetherington. She married Howard J. Harden, Sr., in 1928. They lived in Scotland Neck and Cherryville, NC; Phoebus, Norfolk, Richmond and other Virginia communities and in Jacksonville, Florida for many years.
After Mr. Harden's death in 1992, Viola returned to North Carolina and shared a home with her sister, Leona until her passing, and then resided at The Courtyards at Berne Village.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Harden was predeceased by her son, Howard Johnson Harden, Jr., in 1997, her brothers and sisters, Alfred, Caddie, Eddie, Leona, Lonnie, Samuel and Timothy.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Ellen L. Harden of San Bruno, Calif., grandsons, Mark Harden, and his wife, Linda, of Centennial, Colorado, Robert Harden, and his wife, Laurie of San Francisco, CA, Scott Harden, and his wife, Sora, of Pasadena, Calif; great-grandchildren, Autumn, Hannah, Howard, Mackenzie, Robert; nieces and nephews, Jean and Leonard Taylor of Vanceboro, Harvey Lee Harris of Durham, Melba Hawks of New Bern Gladys McCullough of Vanceboro, Tom Neely of Gastonia, Harold Noble of Seattle, Wash, Joan Phillips of Roanoke Rapids, Ann Raymer of Charlotte, Rhoda Mae Webber of New Bern, Lonnie Wetherington, Jr. of Vanceboro, Richard Wetherington of Vanceboro, Robert Worthington of Vanceboro, Sammy Worthington of Vanceboro and Wilmer Wetherington of Vanceboro.
Funeral services were held at West Vanceboro Church of God, 2360 Highway 43 North, Vanceboro, NC 28586, with Rev. Robert Worthington officiating.
Burial wasat Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23505.
