U.S. Congressman. He graduated from South Carolina College, in 1826, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1829 and was a professor in the University of Alabama, (1831-34), when he resigned to practice law. He was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1836-38) and was Chargé d’Affaires to Belgium, (1842-44). In 1845, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving until 1851. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he practiced law and during the Civil War, served as a Colonel in the Confederate Army until he resigned for not being promoted Brigadier General, in 1862. He was then appointed by Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Confederate commissioner to Tennessee. After the war, he resumed the practice of law in Augusta, Georgia and was U.S. Minister to Brazil, (1877-81).
