Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. He was part of the Hungarian Water Polo teams that won the Gold Medal at the 1952 Summer Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland and at the 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. He also was part of the Hungarian Swimming team in 1956, competing in the 200 meter breaststroke. He had previously competed in the 1948 Summer Olympic Games in London, England when the Hungarian Water Polo team won the Silver Medal. He later became the coach for the Hungarian Water Polo team, and in the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow, Soviet Union, he served as the Hungary Flag Bearer at the opening ceremony. His son, István Szívós Jr., would go to anchor the Hungarian Water Polo team for four consecutive Olympic games from 1968 to 1980.
