HATTERAS NATIVE KILLED - Mr. Frazier Luther Peele, who was born in Hatteras in 1907, was killed instantly in an automobile wreck on July 13th [1966] on NC-12 four miles north of Hatteras Village.

He was a highly respected leader in his community, and was given credit for the first Engelhard to Hatteras Ferry back in the 1940's. With very little formal education and foresight to see a desperate need for a ferry to cross this island, and no money, Mr. Peele, on a shoestring, started his first ferry for the people there on the Island. Realizing the need, he started a service that eventually brought about this operation to the attention of the State Highway Commission, which later resulted in the State buying the Ferry.

He was a Port Captain of the Hatteras Dicks for the Ferry Run operated by the NC State Highway Commission, in which employ he had been since 1957. During that year the State acquitted the business which Peele operated on a toll basis. Prior to operating the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry, he ran a freight and passenger boat from Hatteras to Engelhard.

In addition to the State position, Peele was an operator of a truck line and a restaurant in Hatteras which bears his name. He was a descendant of one of the oldest and most famous families on the Island.

Peele's immediate survivors are his widow, Mrs. Viola Willis Peele; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskill Peele; three sons: Boyd Peele of Norfolk, Keith Peele of New Orleans, La., and Irish W. "Mike" Peele of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Mrs. Carl Ludwick of Hatteras; two brothers: Litchfield Peele of Maine and Fulford Peele of Hatteras; three sisters: Mrs. Alan Ballance of Elizabeth City, Mrs. Luther Austin and Mrs. Donald Oden of Hatteras; and 9 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon in the Hatteras Methodist Church of which he was a member.

Frazier Luther Peele, 63, of Hatteras was killed instantly in a wreck July 13 at 11:40 a.m. on N.C. Highway 12 four miles north of Hatteras village. Mr. Peele, who was driving a 1965 Buick Skylark, was traveling south on N.C. 12 at about 45 m.p.h. when he collided with a 1961 International tractor and trailer traveling south driving by Johnie Harold Stephens, 28, of Chesapeake, Va.

Trooper Britton, who investigated the accident, said that Peele ran across the center line and hit the left rear wheel of the trailer. Britton said that Stephens ran off the road trying to avoid the accident but was unable to get the trailer off quickly enough. He reported no negligence on the part of Stephens.

According to Britton, the physical condition of Peele immediately before the accident has been undetermined. There was some speculation that he may have suffered a heart attack. Peel's car was a total loss with the motor being pushed into the front seat and an estimated $600 damage being done to the trailer. Stephens was not injured.

Mr. Peele was port captain of the Hatteras docks for the ferry run operated by the N.C. Highway Commission, in which employ he had been since 1957. During that year the State acquired the business which Mr. Peele had operated on a toll basis.
