Thomas is the son of John Choate 1624-1695, an English Immigrant and Sargent of the Militia, and his wife Anne Carramas 1637-1727, also an English Immigrant, who resided in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. Thomas rose to the rank of Captian in the Militia. At 19 years old on October 14th, 1690, he married his first wife Mary Varney 1669-1733, the daughter of Ipswich residents Thomas Varney, 1630-1792, a Corporal in the Militia, and Abigail Proctor 1637-1732. Together they had at least nine children: Anna 1691-1739; Thomas Jr, Lt. 1693-1774; Mary 1695-1767; John 1697-1765; Abigail 1699-1726; Francis 1701-1777; Rachel 1701-1783; Ebenezer 1706-1766; and Sarah 1708-1736. Mary died in Ipswich (some say on Hog Island) in 1733. The following year, on September 24th, 1734, Thomas married the widow Mrs Mary (Ayer) Calef, 1666-1743, who was then 66, to help care for his household and children. They had no children together. Mary Ayers died June 27th, 1743. In On the 9th of November that same year, he married for a third time, the Ipswich resident widow Mrs Hannah (Cogswell) Burnham 1693-1782, who was 50 that year and also well past birthing any children.
