Her first husband, Miles A. Smyer (1833-1864), enlisted in the CSA Army on 12 Jun 1861 as a Private, Company F, South Carolina Hampton Legion Infantry Battalion Volunteers. He died during the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia on 95 May 1864, and was buried on the battlefield. Miles and Mary had two sons, Franklin Lafayette Smyer, Sr. and Miles Vernon Smyer.
