Baker was killed as a bystander by flying debris from a B-29 named "Jook" Girl as it crashed on takeoff from the island of Tinian on February 10, 1945. The entire crew of 11 men were killed. They were fully loaded and headed for a bombing mission to Ota, Japan. The B-29 was not able to gain altitude and crashed.
