Dr. Gustavus Brown was a noted colonist from Charles County Maryland. He and his family owned a manor called Rose Hill. When he died, his wife erected a tombstone for her husband on the property. It is interesting to note that his son Gustavus Brown is buried in the Stone Family Cemetery (Port Tobacco). He was also a friend to George Washington and he was one of attending physicians when George Washington died.

Scared to the memory of doctor Richard Gustavus Brown. This tomb-stone erected by his relict Margaret Brown. In testimony of her respect and affection: and as a monument of his skill as a physician, and his learning as a scholar: of his wisdom as a philosopher, his patriotism as a citizen, and his generosity as a friend: of his elegance as a gentleman, and his hospitality as a neighbor: of his kindness as a master, his tenderness as a husband and parent, and of his benevolence as a man. He died 30th September 1804, Aged 56 years.
