A rosary followed by a Mass of Christian burial for Margaret Mary Jewell, who died Feb. 19, 1996, at age 71, will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 1996, in St. Birgitta Catholic Church.

Mrs. Jewell was a homemaker, former teacher and a columnist for community publications in the St. Helens area. She died Feb. 19, 1996, in her St. Helens home at the age of 71.

Mrs. Jewell was born Dec. 9, 1924, in Great Falls, Mont., and was raised in Gobel Goble, and attended Beaver Home Grade School before and graduateding from Rainier High School. She attended the University of Oregon and Marylhurst College.

She taught at Neer City School in Goble and was a substitute teacher at St. Frederick School. She was also a home tutor in the St. Helens School District.

In 1949, she and married Eugene Jewell were married at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Scapoose. Her maiden name was Driscoll.

Mrs. Jewell was active in the Columbia County Republican Party and was a chapter leader in the John Birch Society.

She wrote a home cooking column for the St. Helens Sentinal-Mist newspaper and a gardening advice column for the County Living publication of the Columbia County Extension Service.

Mrs. Jewell is survived by her husband, Eugene of St. Helens; her daughters, Natalie Koch of Stayton, Catherine Hawk of Phoenix, Ore., Monica D. Well of Bend and Jeannemarie Riley of Portland; a brother, Gordon Driscoll of St. Helens; a sister, Norma Gilmore of Eugene; and 10 grandchildren.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Scappoose. The family suggests remembrances be contributions to Birthright of Oregon or the church.
