Father was George Washington Filyaw and mother was Lillie Pearl Clark Powers of Tennessee.
Seems when he was young he was run over by a bulldozer and his back was broken. He has had five back surguries for it prior to his death.(Info from wife Rose) His daughter, Pat Filyaw (2011) stated he fell off a piece of heavy equipment he was doing mechanic work on in 1961 and landed in a ditch on the pipe on his back and injured his spine and has had 6 back surgeries over the years.
Had a very hard life. After his mother's death, his father took him up on the mountain and just dropped him off with kinfolks there and never returned for him. He was passed around from one family to another it seems (Info wife Rose). His daughter Pat (2011) states when he was 3 years old he went to live with relatives. Pat's version is more accurate I believe because he was born 1920 and his father died 1923.
