JOHN PRENTISS CARTER.
John Prentiss Carter, of Hattiesburg, Lieutenant-Governor of the State of Mississippi, was born February 7, 1840, near Augusta, Perry County, Miss. He is the son of Abner Carter and wife, Isabella McLeod Carter. His ancestors came to America from Scotland and settled in North Carolina. John McLeod, his maternal grandfather, removed from North Carolina in 1808 to Mississippi Territory, and settled in Jackson County on Chickasahay River, near Buckatunna, and represented that county in the Constitutional Convention of Mississippi which was held in 1817. Isaac Carter, his paternal grandfather, immigrated from Virginia to Georgia, and moved thence to Mississippi Territory in 1808, and settled on Leaf River near Augusta, Perry County. The father of the subject of this sketch was a Colonel in the State militia. Probate Judge of Perry County and Representative in the State Legislature. Governor Carter attended the Salem High School in Greene County, Miss., from 1849 to 1857, under the instruction of David Moore; entered Centenary College, Louisiana; was a member of the Sophomore class in October, 1857, and was graduated with second honor July, 1860, receiving the A. B. degree; enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861; served as Lieutenant in Company G, Twentyseventh Mississippi Regiment of Infantry in 1862, and First Lieutenant of same company in 1863; was captured at the battle of Lookout Mountain and imprisoned on Johnson's Island, Ohio, and confined there until released June 23, 1865; read law after the war and was licensed to practice in 1866; was a member of the House of Representatives from Perry County, sessions of 1865, 1866, 1867 and 1888; County Attorney of Perry County from 1867 to 1869; delegate from Perry County to the Constitutional Conventions of 1865 and 1890; was State Senator from First District, sessions of 1874, 1875, 1876, 1877, 1878 and 1880; elected LieutenantGovernor November 3, 1903. Governor Carter is a Democrat; member of the Methodist Church and President of Board of Stewards and Trustees; is a Mason, Eminent Commander Hattiesburg Commandery, Knights Templar; President of Hattiesburg Board of Trade; President of Hattiesburg National Bank of Commerce; was married December 24, 1868, to Margaret C. McCullum, daughter of John McCullum and wife, Anna McCullum, of Enon, Miss. The ancestors of Mrs. Carter immigrated to America from Scotland and afterwards removed to Mississippi Territory in 1808, and settled in Wayne County. Governor and Mrs. Carter have six children: John McCullum, Prentiss Abner. George Henry, Annie Isabella, Charles Galloway and Martha Ruth.
