He was a carpenlter by trade and worked off and on at this occupation, returning to farming when jobs were scarce in the building trade. He was a very kind neighbor, good to everyone and always ready to help his neighbors in time of stress or need. He was married to Miss Ina Fletcher at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Clintonville, New York, on May 30, 1906, by the Rev. James M. Casse, and they spent 54 happy years together.
He was a member of Tahawus Lodge No. 790, F. and A. M. joining in January 1908, and was presented with the Fifty Year Grand Lodge Award in April 1959. Masonic services were held at his late home on Saturday evening, December 17th, 1960.
He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Ina Shipman, and one sister, Mrs. Ralza Lawrence of Jay, besides several nieces and nephews.
He was cared for by his wife during his illness until Mrs. Shipman herself became ill.
A prayer service was held on Sunday, December 18th, 1960, at 1:30 p.m., at his home, with funeral services conducted at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Jay at 2 p.m., Rev. Luther Taylor offficiating.
Pall bearers were Fred Forbes, Frank Pierce, Jasper Hesseltine, Stanley Walsh, Benjamin Hathaway and Gordon Clark. Interment was in Central Cemetery at Jay.
