Deceased Name: Joseph Costas Serbin
Joseph Costas Serbin, 82, of New London, died July 13, 2009, at The Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at New London First Christian Church. Pastor Tom Day will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be conducted by Emmette J. Shields Post 55, American Legion at Barkley Cemetery, New London. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church. Smith Funeral Home & Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Serbin was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Costas and Bertha Serbin. He was married to Mildred Ruth Settle, June 4, 1950, in Monroe City. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Stephen Keith Serbin, of Rockville, Md., and Dennis Craig Serbin, of Germantown, Md.; one grandson, Jaime Serbin, Gathersburg, Md.; a special niece and nephew, Bill and Iva Turner, of Philadelphia, Pa.; and nieces and nephews from Fresno, Calf., and Pennsylvania.
Mr. Serbin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Anthony Serbin; one sister, Anna Turner; and brother-in-law, Keith Settle.
The Serbins had made their home in New London since June of 1987. Joe was a RCA dealer in Rockville, Md., for 30 years. He was past president of the Rockville Rotary Club and former member of the New London Lions Club. He was a member and elder emeritus of New London First Christian Church.
Mr. Serbin was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He served aboard the U.S.S. Hector, U.S.S. Cascade, U.S.S. Burias in the Pacific theater. He re-enlisted and served from 1947 until 1952 on the U.S.S. Haynsworth. He attended Drexel University, George Washington University and graduated from Girard College in Philadelphia.
Memorials may be made to the New London First Christian Church or the Northeast Missouri Humane Society.
Pallbearers will be Tim Flowerree, Tom Flowerree, Gaylord Winders, Larry Vaughn, Chris Misner and Jim Thompson. Honorary bearers will be Richard Hamm, Clark Keithly, Don Schmitz, Dave Jarman, Russell Tobin and Bill Harlow.
