Gospel preacher. Samuel Thurman Lovell Jr., 90, passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 12, 2011, in a local health care facility. He was surrounded by his family members. He was born and raised on Signal Mountain, and lived most of his adult life in Jasper, Tenn. He retired from Bell South with over 40 years of service and was a longtime member of Jasper Church of Christ. He was a retired Church of Christ minister and Gruetli-Laager Church of Christ, Gruetli-Laager, Tenn., was the last church where he served as minister. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served his country during World War II in England, France and Germany. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 55 years, Martha Daffron Lovell; his parents, Samuel Thurman and Josephine Daniel Lovell; and brother, Joseph D. Lovell. Survivors include his children, Marilynne Lovell Quick and, Mary Jo Bates, both of Jasper and Samuel A. (Debi) Lovell, of Chesnee, S.C.; grandchildren, Tommy (Cindy) Quick, of Jasper, Rose Michelle Quick, of Chattanooga, Donda Renea Tate, of Hixson, E.L. "Bo" (Jolene) Tate III, of Auburn, Maine, Richard B. Tate, of Jasper, Gerald Leroy (Sheilah) Tate and Toby Bates, both of Soddy-Daisy, Derek (Katie) "K.B." Lovell, of Boiling Springs, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Michael Ledford, of Tunnel Hill, Ga., Shane Ledford, of Virginia, Emily and Tyler Quick, Jasper, Hillary and Jordan Tate, of Auburn, Maine, Kristin and Joshua Tate, of Soddy-Daisy, Trevor, Haley and Annabelle Bates, of Soddy-Daisy; one stepgrandchild, Brian; seven great-great-grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; sister, LouAnn Fetzer, of Huntsville, Ala.; sister-in-law, Catherine P. Lovell, of Gulfport, Miss.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Rogers Funeral Home in Jasper on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m. CDT, officiated by Pastor Tommy Quick. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Jasper. Visitation will be from 48 p.m. CDT today, Jan. 14, at Rogers Funeral Home in Jasper and one hour before service time on Saturday, Jan. 15.
