Deceased was born in the old Eagle Hotel on North Water Street on Dec. 22, 1867, his father being proprietor of the hotel. The son spent his boyhood here and his young manhood in Vernon Township on the farm. He was wedded in Feb., 1889, to Miss Daisy Graham of this city.
When the letter delivery system was innaugurated in Meadville, Mr. Scowden was one of the first letter carriers appointed and served several years. For several years, he was Erie train dispatcher. Of late years, he had been a member of the firm Scowden Bros., Coal and Cement Dealers, his brothers, Fred and James, being associated with him.
George Scowden was one of nature's noblemen and his death in the prime of life, when all things pertaining to moral existence seemed brightest, is deeply regretted by a host of friends.
Mr. Scowden was a member of St. Paul's Reformed church and a singer in the choir. He was also a member of Meadville lodge, N. 219 B.P.O.Elks, lodge no. 408, F.& A.M., and Crawford lodge No. 734, I.O.O.F. In politics, he was a Republican and was announced as a candidate for alternate delegate to the Republican national convention.
The deceased is survived by his wife and one daughter, Miss Genevieve, also by four brothers: Edward of Sharon; Fred of Meadville; James, of this city; Joseph, Jr., of Tionesta, Pa., and one sister, Mrs. A.O. Van Horne, of Vernon Township. The aged parents also reside in Venon Township, the father, ex-County Commissioner, Joseph Scowden, being in his 89th year, and the mother in her 81st year.
