Alvin H. Blair, a Veteran Railroad Man, Dies Suddenly

Alvin Henry Blair, 69 years old, a veteran Pennsylvania railroad man, died suddenly Wednesday morning at 8:30 o'clock at his home in Crawford avenue, West Side. Mr. Blair has been in poor health since the beginning of the unusually warm weather but was able to be about. He arose at his usual hour and after eating his breakfast he sat down on a chair and died soon afterward. Heart trouble was given as the cause.

Mr. Blair was born at Latrobe May 2, 1852, and spent his boyhood days there. When a young man he entered the service of the Pennsylvania railroad and continued in the employ of the company for 49 years, serving in various capacities. While on duty as a flagman some years ago he met with an accident which resulted in the loss of a foot. Since then he had been a watchman for the company, being located in the West Side for a number of years. From there he was transferred to Dunbar where he remained until pensioned June 1, last.

Mr. Blair resided in the West Side for 40 years and had a wide acquaintance, especially among the Pennsylvania railroad men. He was of a jovial disposition and won the friendship and esteem of all with whom he can in contact. Deceased was twice married. His first wife, who was Miss Hannah Jane Austraw, died in 1883 and later Mr. Blair married Mrs. Mary Blough Wright, who with three sons, John Blair of Canton, O., Edward A. Blair at home and George Blair of Scottdale and Harry Blair of Pittsburgh, a son to the first marriage, survive. Four brothers, George Blair, Wilkinsburg; Lemuel Blair, Pitcairn; A.L. Blair, Derry; Elmer Blair, Latrobe, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Welshonse, Latrobe, and Mrs. James Sneddon, Ohio, also survive.

Mr. Blair was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at 1309 West Crawford avenue, Rev. E.H. Stevens officiating. Interment will be in Hill Grove cemetery.
