Chico Enterprise-Record, Chico, CA, Wednesday, January 3, 1996: "Durham resident found dead in charred home -- By Cathy Brooks Sprain, Staff Writer.

"DURHAM -- A former Durham Unified School District trustee, past Butte County supervisor candidate and retired real estate appraiser died Tuesday morning when fire gutted his Jones Avenue residence.

"The body of Glenivan 'Glen' Crenshaw, a life-long area resident, was discovered in the charred remains of his living room where the fire is believed to have originated, according to Butte County Fire Department personnel.

"Exactly how the fire got started, as well as the cause of Crenshaw's death, is still under investigation, said fire and Butte County Sheriff's Department officials. The 77-year-old had lived on Jones Avenue for nearly 30 years.

"Crenshaw "was an outgoing and active individual," according to Sarah Miller, who had been his neighbor for several years. "He was a very nice man." The neighbors and their kids loved him," she added. The home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived around 6 am.

"Another neighbor called in the emergency after seeing the glow through her bedroom window. Shortly after the report, a deafening bang was heard through the neighborhood as the front windows of Crenshaw's house exploded, Miller said. "It went up extremely fast," she said.

"Four engines, two volunteer fire companies, three water tenders, a support vehicle, battalion chief and fire investigator responded to the 10090 Jones Avenue residence, where Crenshaw lived alone. His wife of 48 years, Marguerite, died in 1993.

"The blaze did not threaten neighboring homes. It was controlled in about 30 minutes but the residence was destroyed, according to personnel at the Butte County Fire-California Department of Forestry command center in Oroville.

"'The origin appears to have been in the living room...The elderly gentleman was found in a chair in the living room,' stated a dispatcher. Crenshaw "was a packrat, he liked to save things," Miller noted. 'We were told that could have been what fed the fire," she pointed out.

"An autopsy will be performed to determine Crenshaw's cause of death, said Butte County Sheriff's Department detective Jos Van Hout.

"Crenshaw was born in Chico, graduated from Chico High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Chico State College. Before his retirement, he was a real estate salesman and appraiser. During the mid-1960s, he ran for the 2nd district Butte County supervisor seat and was narrowly defeated in a run-off election by incumbent Arley Howsden. He served as a county assessment appeals officer and Durham school trustee during the 1970s. Crenshaw had remained active, was a pilot and navigator. Just last week, the 77-year-old had taken to the skies with one of his friends, Miller said"
