Garden of Legends #36. Married to actress Mina Crolius and father of actor James Gleason. William became an actor in 1865 and made his stage debut in Cincinnati with James O’Neil. He rose to fame very quickly and was known as one of the best comedians of the American stage. He worked for a number of years with the James MacCauley Stock Company in Louisville, Kentucky where he played with Louis James, Edwin Booth, Mary Anderson and Edwin Forrest. He later moved to San Francisco and served as stage director for the city’s Grand Opera House. In 1900 Gleason began directing stage plays until 1906. His cremated remains rest in a grave with his wife Mina.
