Sarah's first marriage was to Jehu Jennings Richards (or John J. Richards). Sources are not in agreement on her husband's name. A record has been found for a marriage between Sarah Patrick (Patrick was the surname of her step-father) and John J. Richards in 1897 in McDowell County, West Virginia. (Note: His first name was Jehu on the delayed birth certificate of his son, but it was John in the 1910 census.)
On November 27, 1911, Sarah married Joe L. Carson in Sebastian County, Arkansas. It is unknown why they married in Arkansas. At that time Sarah gave her address as Dallas, and Joe gave his address as Denison, Grayson County, Texas.
