U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Educated in academics, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced to practice law in Athens, Alabama. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1855-56). He was appointed to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of George S. Houston and served from January to November, 1880. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he retired to his farm in Athens, Alabama, until his death at age 80.
