U.S. Congressman, Alabama Governor, U.S. Senator. Moving to Alabama, he attended Lauderdale County Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and commenced to practice law in Florence, Alabama. He was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, in 1832 and was attorney for the Florence judicial district, in 1836. In 1841, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1849. He was again elected to the Thirty-second Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving (1851-61). In 1874, he was elected as a Democrat the 24th Governor of Alabama, serving until 1878. During his two terms, the Alabama Constitution was ratified, the public school system was reorganized and the Alabama State Board of Health was established. After leavings office, he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1878 and served until his death.
