Grace 'Smith' married Henry Julius Cavier on May 24th, 1902 in Tyndall, South Dakota. Grace's infant daughter Margaret was adopted by Henry the same day.
Grace and Henry had five more children before 1917, welcoming Otto Henry, Minnie Sophia, George Irving, Hazel Pearl and Ray Frank to their family.
Henry Cavier (kuh-veer) was a charter member of the Wagner Lutheran Church, but it would take World War I to convince Grace to join.
After the War, the couple's last child, Glenn Zeke joined the family in 1919.

In 1988, Grace and Dorothy (Mitchell) visited George and Glenn Cavier, the last survivors of Grace Cavier's children, at their homes in Wagner, South Dakota. The women revealed what they had discovered about Grace and their connection to the Cavier family.
The brothers were surprised when the Mitchell sisters told them that Grace was their grandmother; and that their mother, Etta May, who was adopted by the Chase family, was Margaret's full blood sister.

Grace Pearl Wares was born November 30, 1881 in the Lincoln Township section of Winterset, Madison County, Iowa to Martin V.B. Wares and Virginia Ann Garner.
In 1896 after her mother's death, she moved with family to Butler township in Sanborn County, South Dakota near the town of Letcher.
She and her sister Dora lived there with brother John on a rented farm 6 miles out, while her father boarded in town. Sister Maggie lived at sister Minnie's place with her husband and son.
In 1899 Grace, 17 and unwed, gave birth to her first daughter, but was forced by family to give her up for adoption. In 1901 Margaret was born. Grace, fearing family would again take a child from her, fled south with the baby. In Tyndall, South Dakota, Grace assumed the alias 'Mrs. Smith' to hide their identities. That is where she met Henry Cavier, a resident of the town, who took them in.
When the Mitchell sisters said their mother's birth name was Thelma Marie, Glenn beamed a knowing smile and nodded his acceptance of their story.
According to him, his mother was a quiet person and kept her thoughts and feelings to herself. He recounted that she once asked him and his siblings if they were ever to have a daughter, would they name her Thelma Marie.
He said she had given no explanation for the request other than to say she had always liked that name. After 62 years, he finally understood her wish, and her suffering.
As it was to be, she was blessed with grandsons.
