William H. Unmessig, the proprietor of Oak Ridge Farm in High Prairie Township, was born in Platte County, Mo., Oct. 11, 1879, the son of R. and Rosalie Myers Unmessig.

William received his education at Beverly, Mo., and came to Leavenworth County with his parents in 1901. He went to Texas in 1909 and with his brother A. A. Unmessig and the brothers bought a farm of 196 acres and made potato raising a specialty. In 1912 they raised 42 car loads of the Bliss Triumph. They sold their farm at Simonton, Texas, in 1918 and returned to Leavenworth County.

In May, 1920, William bought a farm of 244 acres, located one-half mile west of the city limits of Leavenworth. There he had a three-acre orchard of peaches, eight-year-old trees of Elberta and Crawford variety, also a few cherry, plum and apple trees. He also did general farming and had 70 acres of wheat, eight acres of alfalfa, 20 acres of oats and 15 acres of corn. The remainder of the land was timber and pasture.

April 29, 1909 Unmessig was married to Nellie Van Tuyl, a teacher in the Leavenworth schools. She was a graduate of Leavenworth High School and attended Kansas University. They were parents of Rhinehart and Thekla.
