OBITUARY - Alton “Doc” Walter Crowell, 93, of Millingport Road, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Stanly Memorial Hospital in Albemarle.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle by the Revs. Bob Caudle and Steve Autrey. Burial will follow in Richfield Cemetery.

Mr. Crowell was born Aug. 5, 1910, in Richfield, to David Houston Crowell and Neta Feezor Crowell. He attended Richfield School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a pre-med student.

He was a co-founder of Crowell & Ritchie Hardware in Richfield in 1932. After the death of Glenn Ritchie, his partner, the business continued as Crowell Hardware through February 1987, when Mr. Crowell retired. He was the oldest member of Richfield United Methodist Church and active as long as his health permitted. He served as a Sunday school teacher, superintendent and church steward. He was a member of the church choir and active on many church boards and committees through the years. As a Mason and a Shriner, he was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 348, Albemarle, Scottish Rite Degree, and a member of Oasis Shrine Temple, Charlotte.

He was active in the Republican party, a former county commissioner, a charter member of the Richfield Volunteer Fire Department and member of the Richfield Civitan Club, serving as its first president.

Bee keeping was his hobby, and he enjoyed giving honey and pecans to friends at Christmas. He enjoyed growing flowers, especially roses. He enjoyed working with the community and was known for his charitable gifts and care for others. He took great pride in his family and was a loving, thoughtful husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Ingram Crowell, in 1972; and by a sister, Breganza Gosney.
