U.S. Congressman. While working as a clerk in a legal firm, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in April 1798 and commenced the practice of law in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. During the War of 1812, he served in the Pennsylvania Militia, as a Captain of the Huntingdon Volunteers. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was Burgess of Huntingdon, (1815, 17, 19, 21-24, 26). In 1831, he was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-second Congress, serving until 1933. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he continued to practice law until his death at age 63.
