George Byrd "Paw" Castleberry, 85, of Warrior, formerly of Midfield, passed away after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was born to Solomon Green (Bob) Castleberry and Florence McCaleb Castleberry in Kansas, Ala., on May 12, 1925. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946, after serving in WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Fultondale. After serving in the war, he graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University). After graduating college he married his wife of 54 years, Sally Sandlin Castleberry formerly of Carbon Hill. He retired from U.S. Steel where he worked as a Metallurgist.
Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at Messmer Goodwin Funeral Home, Warrior from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with chapel services at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at McDade Cemetery in Carbon Hill, with graveside services at 2 p.m. Bro. Chris Harper will be officiating.
In addition to his wife, Sally, he is survived by two children, son, Eddie (Deborah) Castleberry of Inverness and daughter, Brenda (Gary) Joffe of Germantown, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Jason Cannon, Ashley, Clinton and Kevin Castleberry; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Lizzie and Bradlee; several nieces and nephews; and a host of extended loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
