Mattye Leigh Merchant, 87, 1612 N. Guadalupe St., died Wednesday at Guadalupe Medical Center. Services are pending at West Funeral Home.
Born Feb. 23, 1900, Jefferson, Texas, she moved with her family to Marshall, Texas, while very young, was raised there and graduated from the Marshall High School. She graduated from the University of Texas in 1920 and married Lawrence B. Merchant in Marshall in 1924.
The coupled lived on the the San Simon Ranch in Lea County and Dallas before moving to Carlsbad in 1949.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the GMC Hospital Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Laura Bemis, Roundrock, Texas, and Leigh Cardwell, Austin, Texas; a brother, Nelson Moseley of Amarillo, Texas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family requests no visitation and memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Services for Mattye Leigh Merchant, 87, 1612 N. Guadalupe St., are to held at Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery.
Pallbearers are to be Frank Davol, Lige Michel, Les Dow, Roy Blackman, Dick Mulkey, Dick Merchant and J.D. Merchant.
