Wife of Elisha Harrison Adams
Daughter of Charles Gilbert Smith & Nancy Gardner

She was the mother of two children, Leroy Adams, 1883-1923, buried at Smocks, and Hattie Florence Adams Nelson, 1886-1964.

Eliza took a deep cold and died of tuberculosis.

The following is from ____________ (names omitted for privacy reasons)of Missouri. She has cut and pasted part of another email she received concerning Eliza Jane and her husband's second wife, Ida Brengle.

This is part of an email from _____________, Hattie Nelson's granddaughter (one of them).

It probably doesn't matter, but I wanted you to know that I remember my Grandmother Nelson (Hattie F.) having a large picture...(like about 14" X 17") of her real mother (Eliza Jane) always displayed on her bedroom wall...I noticed it particularly as something I had always associated with my Grandmother's home whenever I was there from early childhood. It was still on her bedroom wall when I visited her for the last time in Tulsa at her home at 1007 North Maine around 1961. I was in college then and had gone to Tulsa to be Maid of Honor in my friend from 5th grade's wedding. It was the last time I saw her. This was before she was moved to the Elder Facility where she later died. I think probably my Aunt Bretta Kathleen had the picture after they sold Grandmother's home in Tulsa, but it was probably destroyed when a fire broke out at the Blackledges' cabin on Grand Lake... Aunt Bretta had stored lots of pictures and other memorabilia from Grandmother's house there...what a sad mishap...what a loss for us now...ancestry meant very little to us then. Anyway, I thought I'd mention it on the outside chance maybe it was Uncle Ed who got the picture of Eliza instead of Aunt Bretta...in which case, Jef actually might have it and be unaware of who it is. As I remember the frame was a dark oxidized brass tone with a curved top that had a flower (kind of like a dogwood blossom) at each edge of the curve...I think the bottom was the same way, but it could have been just straight across. The frame was not an oval, but more like two parallel sides topped with an arc. It was a fairly close-up photograph...like head neck and shoulders only. Eliza had her hair parted in the center and pulled straight back on each side in a bun or chignon, giving her a very severe look...can't remember how the back was done, but it was not long and flowing. It seems she had a very high banded collar with lace edging and either a large oval brooch or pendant at her neckline. If Jeff finds something somewhat like this among his dad's old pictures, it could very well be Eliza. Something else I remember...My Grandmother Nelson told me that Eliza and Ida Brengle were like very best friends from the time of their youth, even though Ida was not yet married. Apparently, after Eliza died leaving Hattie and Roy motherless, Ida, who already knew Hattie and Roy and had visited very frequently in the EH Adams household, tried to help EH as much as she could with the children and household...out of friendship and concern for her best friend's family who were grieving as much as she was. One thing led to another and Ida eventually filled the shoes of her best friend, as E.H.'s wife and mother to his children, both her own and Eliza's.
