Ulysses was the son of George Washington Phillips and Mary Elizabeth Hughes.

As a young man, he would leave the beautiful rural Appalachian mountains of western North Carolina in search of work; becoming employed with the Goodyear Tire Company in Akron, Summit County, Ohio.

He would meet Freda Juanita Dotson; the daughter of William Judson Dotson and Dollie Hannah Leeson.

Ulysses and Freda were married on 30 Nov 1922 in Akron, Summit County, Ohio. Performed by: Rev. Reed J. Downs, Minister.

They would later move into the home of Freda's mother, who by 1929 was widowed.

Ulysses would die at a local hospital in Knox County, Ohio.

He was 54-years of age.

After the death of Ulysses, Freda would later remarry to Ralph Joseph Phillips, son of William "Bill" Phillips and Florence Garrison, on 01 Mar 1952 in Akron, Summit County, Ohio. Performed by: Rev. Della H. Saxton.

Ralph had relocated to Akron in search of work, leaving the rural Appalachian community of Yellow Creek located in Graham County, NC where he was born; some 45-miles from it's neighboring Swain County.

Freda and Ralph were both employed at the Goodyear Tire Company where they would meet. They would later remove to Tennessee, making their home in the beautiful mountains of Maryville near the North Carolina border.

Freda and Ralph would both die there and are interred together in Alcoa, Blount County, TN at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
