Thomas Cooney, a native of Kildare, Ireland (near Dublin), was born September 8, 1832. He is the son of Richard and Mary Cooney. In 1854, he emigrated to the United States, spending six months in the city of New York, and then came to Wisconsin and located in the town of Hartford, Washington County, with his parents.
In March, 1862, he enlisted in United States Navy. He served three years and four months, and during a large portion of the time, he was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
He was married in Hartford on October 15, 1866, to Miss Mary Grady, daughter of Michael Grady. They settled on a farm Sec. 29 on 40 acres of land, where they had six children: Mary, Eliza, Richard, James, William and Anna.
