Originally enlisted in the Navy on June, 1943 and spent 22 months in active duty. During his overseas assignment, he was a tail-gunner in a TBM aboard aircraft carrier VSS Makin Island, where he received his gunner's wings.

He received campaign bars for the American theatre, southwest Pacific and European theatre, the Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf cluster for two injuries, good conduct and victory bars, presidential citation and American defense. He also received two silver stars which represent eleven major battles.
