U.S. Congressman. Growing up in Iowa, he worked at his father's lumberyard, moved to Wisconsin, in 1881 and was manager of the Necedah Lumber Company. He was chairman of the Republican National Congressional Committee and a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, (1889-93). In 1893, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1907. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he retired from public service. He died at the age of 59 from liver and kidney problems.
