U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1827, he commenced the practice of medicine in New York City. Becoming interested and affiliated with the Latter Day Saint movement, he followed Bingham Young to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1848 and continued the practice of medicine. When the Mormons considered application of Utah Territory for statehood, Bernhisel was elected as an Independent to the Thirty-second Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1851-59). He was again elected to the elected to the Thirty-seventh Congress, serving (1861-63). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of medicine and served as regent of the University of Utah, until his death at age 82.
