Velma Jo Banta McKay, 77, of Henryville, formerly of Vevay and Kent, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany.

She was born Aug. 29, 1933, in Braytown, the daughter of Graham Edward and Gertrude Mae Harmon Banta. She was raised and attended school in Switzerland County. She supported her husband's call to ministry. She was also a private baby sitter for many years and had worked in housekeeping at Hanover College. While ministering in Hebron, Ky., she worked in the cafeteria at Conner High School. She had helped serve in ministry at Carter's Creek in Campbellsburg; Coffee Creek Christian Church in Paris Crossing; Kent Christian Church for 18 years in Kent; Hebron Church of Christ for five years; Mount Tabor Christian Church in Salem for four and a half years; and currently with Paynesville Christian Church in Paynesville. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and raising flowers.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Joseph Clyde "Joe" McKay, whom she married Aug. 25, 1950; one son, Eric McKay of Jeffersonville; four daughters, Brenda Gittner of Greenville, Rhonda Bowyer of Clarksville, Carol Ann Hargett of Fairborn, Ohio, and Darlene Adams of Burlington, Ky.; two sisters, Phyllis Hensley of Deputy and Mary Charlotte May of Hanover; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one nephew and one niece.

The funeral was at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery.
