Eugene enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at St. Louis, Missouri on 3 Jul 1942, the day before his 22nd birthday. He was a 1939 graduate of University City High School. Following graduation, he played semi-pro football and baseball. He was working as a cement finisher for the Fruco Construction Company in St. Louis at the time of his enlistment.

Before being accepted into the service, Eugene was required to answer an extensive questionnaire, submit to a background check and provide a character reference, which came from W. S. Steele, a long-time family friend who knew him since birth. Eugene completed basic training at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, earning satisfactory marks in areas as diverse as rifle training, musketry, field sanitation, combat signals, and military courtesy.

With Company F, 6th Marine Division, Eugene embarked on USA Transport at San Diego on 20 Oct 1942, and crossed the International Date Line on 3 Nov 1942 en route to Wellington, New Zealand. At Wellington, he boarded the U.S.S. President Jackson on 24 Dec. 1942, and arrived at Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands, on 4 Jan. 1943. A rifleman, Eugene participated in active combat against Japanese forces from 4 Jan 1943 to 19 Feb 1943. He left Guadalcanal again aboard the U.S.S. President Jackson on 19 Feb 1943 and disembarked at Wellington on 27 Feb 1943.

Eugene contracted malaria while in the Solomon Islands and he was hospitalized from 2 Mar 1943 to 3 Dec 1943 at the Naval Hospital in Memphis, before moving on to Corona, outside San Diego.

Eugene was promoted to Private First Class on 26 Jul 1943. He was recommended for limited duty and was sent to the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings, Nebraska where he worked as an auto parts clerk, a position in which he served from 1 Mar 1944 to 27 Oct 1944.

Eugene was reclassified and transferred to Camp Pendleton, where he served as an auto parts clerk on 13 Dec 1944. He was promoted to Corporal on 10 May 1945. He was honorably discharged on 14 Nov 1945 at Camp Pendleton. He listed continuing his education as his post-war plan.

Eugene was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, cousin and friend. He sold life insurance for Catholic Knights and Provident American for many years, and he was loved by all.

A sincere thank you to Reilly for generously sponsoring Eugene's memorial.
