Scientist. He formulated the theory of evolution by natural selection independently of Charles Darwin. The theory was published with Darwin as co-author in 1858 in an article in the "Proceedings of the Linnean Society" one year before Darwin's book "Origin of Species" was printed. Alfred Wallace wrote 22 books and more than 700 articles on a wide variety of subjects, and made many important contributions to the fields of biology, geography, geology and anthropology. His best known books are Darwinism‚ The Geographical Distribution of Animals, and the The Malay Archipelago (which is still in print). His numerous honours include: Gold Medal (Société de Géographie); Founder's Medal (Royal Geographical Society); Darwin-Wallace and Linnean gold Medals (Linnean Society); Copley, Darwin and Royal Medals (Royal Society); and the Order of Merit. His neglected grave was restored in April 2000 by the A. R. Wallace Memorial Fund (Dr George Beccaloni, Chairman) and a bronze plaque with a portrait of Wallace was installed on the new granite surround. The lease of the grave plot was extended by 100 years and the Linnean Society of London are the new leaseholders.
