She was born in Thomaston, Ga., where she lived until moving to Lorain 45 years ago.
She attended Thomaston Star Training School.
Mrs. Clayton helped organize the Body of Christ Church in Lorain. She organized the church's first choir, served as a missionary for many years and was a charter member. She served on the Mother Board and was known in the church as Mother Clayton.
She was employed in private homes in Lorain, Elyria and Amherst and last worked for the McCruski family.
Survivors include her daughter, Louise Guice of Lorain; sisters Margaret Hinsfield of Saginaw, Mich., and Willa Mae Stafford of Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Billie Stafford, and brothers living in Saginaw and in Atlanta, Ga.; and eight grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 70 great-great-grandchildren, three great-great-great-grandchildren, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clark Grantling; second husband, the Rev. Herschel Clayton; daughter, Bobby Avery; son, Clark Grantling Jr.; and seven brothers.
Friends may call Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of service at noon at Body of Christ Glorious Church, 2116 W. 23rd St., Lorain. The Rev. Damond T. Holt and Bishop James Hannibal will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
