Ethel was the daughter of John Worth Cochran and Ella Lucinda Barker. She was raised on Alarka.

She was first married to William Crawford Crisp in Jackson County.

Five children would be born to this union:

* Charles Samuel Crisp
* Shirley Ann Crisp
* Martha Jacqueline Crisp

They would make their home in Dillsboro.

After the death of Will, she would re-marry to Thomas Ruben Hooper, the widower of Dollie Gosnell who died in 1964.
