The son of William Jack & Mary Ann Anderson, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Jackson Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County, pointlessly overstating his age by two years, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg (nature of wound not stated in his service records), he was hospitalized and never returned to active duty, honorably discharging with his company May 26, 1863. Despite the wound, on February 27, 1864, he enrolled in Harrisburg with the regular army as a private with the U.S. Signal Corps and honorably discharged August 23, 1865.

He married Clara Ella Yohn March 19, 1872, in Newport, Perry County, and fathered Ellie (b. @1873), Elsie C. (b. @1877 - married James L. Agnew), Mildred M. (b. 04/30/80 - married a Wright), and Camiella (b. @1881, d. @1883). By 1900, he was living with his family in Coldwater Township, Butler County, Iowa, where he was a member of Greene Post No. 200, G.A.R. He died the town's oldest resident and its last Civil War veteran, a passing that prompted The Greene Recorder to use the width of its front page to headline the event and a full column for his biography and funeral details.
