Alex Colbert was a wonderfully gifted young man. Endowed with talent for music and exceptional insight, the number of his days on earth far too short for those he knew. Living an exuberant life in spite of his diagnosis with cystic fibrosis, he put all of his lifetime into 20 short years.
His musical ability provided an outlet for his creativity and his struggle with CF. With music producer Tim Nold, Alex spent a lot of time writing, recording and editing. He wrote seven songs. Alex wrote the lyrics and composed the music for his anthem "65 Roses", the title for which was inspired by a young child's version of the name of the disease "Cystic Fibrosis".
There are many, many photographs and videos on the internet, available for you to learn about this inspirational young man. Most contain the either the music, lyrics, or both from this song.

65 Roses
©2010Alex Colbert

The rose falls down,
to the ground
it doesn't make a sound
the lightning strikes,
before your eyes
it's black and white

so I'll close my eyes
and I'll walk towards the light
and I'll say goodbye
so I'll close my eyes
and I'll walk towards the light
as I say goodbye

I start to bleed from the thorns
on the rose,
it slowly takes control
I'm laying here
so tired and weak
that I fall to my knees,
I beg you please
just give me one more day
just give me one more night
to say goodbye to life

You're at the edge of the earth
Your heart cries out,
You're broken now
Lay the roses at my feet
Take away this disease
65 roses lay at my feet
It's our disguise, to this disease

A friend's Utube video A Tribute to Alex

The most comprehensive and with the most footage of videos is the coverage of Alex Colbert by First Coast News.

His life is a testamony of his family. His brothers acceptance, his parents faith, dedication and unfailing love. Alex's mother was instrumental in forming the Jacksonville Chapter of the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Alex shared his story with First News. His main goal and his statement was that he wanted to give others the desire to fight. His statement was that he "wanted people to remember him for his fight to live". Surely, he accomplished that. What a remarkable impact on the world this young man made.

With a spirit and insight far beyond his years, he was an "old soul" that showed in his ability to address many events with an touching respect, as in his video tribute to his friend Pender Raulerson , who died in an accident while swimming.

65 Roses day is the last Friday in May, set up as a National Awareness day to inform and educate and raise funds for cystic fibrosis.

Cystic Fibrosis is a recessive genetic disease.

MACCLENNY, Fla -- They gathered in the sanctuary of Christian Fellowship Temple: parents and children, teachers and students, doctors and nurses.

It was Jan. 12. They were there to pray and sing together, to celebrate the life of Alex Colbert, who died the week before, after a 20-year fight with cystic fibrosis.

Colbert used his lifelong battle to spread an important message: Never give up and always keep fighting.

Born on Aug. 19, 1989 in Ft. Lauderdale, he was diagnosed with CF in infancy. The terminal, genetic disease causes mucus to build up in the body's organs and shut them down. Patients with CF have trouble digesting food as well as trouble breathing.

There is no cure, only daily treatments of medicine. Most CF patients do not live past their 30s
