He was elected county commissioner in 1975 and was on the Friend Grove School Board for more than 20 years. He was active in the PTA of Bellmont Grade School.
He was a member of Lick Prairie Christian Church, where he was an elder and Sunday school superintendent.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, the former Gladys Beehn; three daughters, Mary Alice Peterson of Morris, Ida Mae Willis of Newburgh, Ind., and Faye Sheley of Taylorville; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services at Short Memorial Chapel, with burial in Lick
