James Somers was born to the founder of Somers Point, John Somers and his wife Hannah Hodgkins. He was one of 10 children. James married Abigail Adams (who was born in Hartford, Connecticut) they had 12 children: first born Sarah in 1720 and last born child, Judith, in 1739; there were 9 daughters and three sons (John, James and Isaac). James's will was dated 30 April 1758, and proved 15
April 1761. Mentioned was son John to whom was devised a track on GEH River, 450 A. One acre to the Quakers where the meeting house stands. To son James Jr, the homestead, 449A with the grist mill, dam and one acre purchase of Return Badcock. To son Isaac land on the southwest side of Peter Coenhover's pf 250 acres. To son John, land on the beach of 100 acres, knownby the name of Great Hamock at the east end of the beach. Mentioned were daus": Sarah Steelman, Hannah Smith, Judith Swain, Abigail Smith, Rebekah Badcock, Mary Somers, Exe. wife Abigail and son James. The will was witnessed by Joseph Mapes, James Robinson and Mathew Dennis. On 10 April 1761 an inventory was filed Pounds 416.0.1 by Joseph Mapes and James Robinson.
