US Congressman and Olympic gold medal sprinter. Fondly and honorably remembered along with his fellow countryman, Jesse Owens, for championship performances at the Berlin Olympic Games of 1936. Metcalfe and Owens stood proud together- two great Americans - as they accepted their gold (Owens) and silver (Metcalfe) medals for the 100-m, much to the racist chagrin of the infamous Adolph Hitler. Metcalfe also won a silver medal in the 1932 Games (100-m) when he finished a hair behind countryman Eddie Tolan (gold). Ralph Metcalfe died of a heart attack at age 68 in 1978.
